Mission: All In A Day's Work
Location: USS Excalibur, Deck 13, Chief Medical Officer's Office
Timeline: Mission Day 3 at 0710

“We’ve dropped out of warp.” Acklom interrupted Cassandra as she was in the middle of starting the morning medical huddle.

As a group, the small number of Starfleet personnel that made up Cassandras senior medical staff got up and converged on the large rectangular window that gave the Excalibur CMO a lovely view of the blackness of space. On this occasion Tania Borealis dominated the view.

Cassandra remained at her desk, giving her staff a moment to take in the planet that was their next mission, the tension in the room etched up a notch. She knew just as they did that their mission was going to be tough and would test how well they would gel together and work as a team. “Ok, people let’s get on shall we.” Her words were a statement not a request.

An incoming transmission from the planet surface flashed urgently on her terminal screen. “Computer open channel.” Cassandra asked as she straightened her position in her chair.

A face haggard and drawn appeared on screen. Framed with buzzcut short white hair, bloodshot brown eyes were underscored with dark smudges. Grime and sweat had dried on the humans’ skin and settled in expression lines. This man’s face spoke of hard work and little sleep. He looked to be in his seventh or eighth decade and he also looked decidedly aggrieved. His voice rough and heavily laden with disgust demanded by way of greeting, “Tell me that you’re not the CMO. Tell me they didn’t send us a bloody ensign.”

“Dr Cassandra Rae, Chief medical officer of the USS Excalibur.” Cassandra introduced herself briskly, frowning, this was not the Daniel Moore on file. “I was expecting a Dr Daniel Moore?”

“Dead, and dead. Partial collapse of the main medical centre not three hours ago.”

“Survivors?” Cassandra asked hiding her alarm.

“We’re still digging.” He rubbed his face with a hand that was bruised and grazed, “Look, just get down here asap. I’m sending co-ordinates, we’ve set up an emergency medical facility in the local park such as it is. We need you and we need your supplies.” The terminal went blank as the yet to be named man cut transmission.

Cassandra leaned back in her chair and looked up at her staff now gathered around her desk at parade rest. “Dr Venice and Petty officer Jardin, you’re with me. Dr Acklom and Dr Leman I suggest you get your team ready for incoming casualties.” Cassandra stood and grabbed her coffee mug, taking a last mouthful before heading out the door. Really there was nothing left to be said. They were as prepared as they were going to be. Cassandra and her medical team just had to get on with it now.

On the way to transporter room four Cassandra and her small senior team picked up their med kits as well as two emergency surgical kits. At least her team would hit the ground running without waiting for the medical supplies to be transported to the surface.
