Mission: Do You Remember?
Location: USS Excalibur, Deck 1, Main Bridge
Timeline: Mission Day 3 at 1040

"Show me that again?" Artorius asked as the seated junior officer replayed the configuration on the monitor of the tactical station. The image showed a blockade of three Romulan vessels appearing, taking a defensive formation. From a nearby moon came the Excalibur, stopping parallel to the Romulan ships, from the hanger decks fighters appeared and a firefight ensued.

"Stop," Artorius ordered the computer. He looked at the young officer. "Wells, you were never a chess player were you?"

Wells sighed, she shook her head. "No Lieutenant. Never had time to pick it up."

"I don't blame you. First look at the other vessels; two Valdores and An old D'deridex. The Valdores alone are enough to cause a serious problem. If we could manage to disable both of them that D'deridex is still fresh. Believe me, an old battlecruiser like that would hang back and wait. If we somehow survived the first two that third would finish us off.

Ensign Wells let that sink in for a brief minute. "So what should I have done?"

"The Excalibur can be imposing enough." He offered. "We're massive and that gives us a psychological advantage. They see a big ship like this staring straight at them they're going to question what we're capable of, and they're going to second guess themselves. They'll scan and size us up sure but there's always that one little room for doubt."

Ensign Wells nodded.

"Running at a parallel course was a novel idea, but it also leaves us exposed. It takes about 25 seconds for Lieutenant Wilson to get her fighters moving, but also in those 25 seconds our shields will be down and that's a lot of damage that can occur. And you also risk the possibility of not having some of those fighters come back alive."

"Which would not make Lieutenant Wilson happy." Wells reflected.

"Not in the least." Artorius agreed. "Sometimes, it's better to just puff out your chest and act like you're the biggest Alpha predator in the area. You create the image, and they back off."

Wells turned her seat around to face the Romulan. "And if they don't sir?"

"It's like Kirk once said-" Artorius explained. "If you're going to shoot, shoot. Don't talk."

"I don't remember him ever saying that."

Artorius gave Ensign Wells a sly grin. "Maybe I confused him with somebody else."

He left Ensign Wells puzzled as he headed for the turbolift.
